The rise of the bum bag: where fashion gets philosophical

Hypebeasts (and celebrities for that matter) around the world must be given credit for the resurgence of this-in my opinion- ridiculous accessory which is now, unthinkably, considered "cool". Why is it that in 2018 this bag, originally introduced in the 80s, is so undeniably popular?

Several months ago I read an intriguing article about the see-through bag and (in true Kim Kardashian style) the see-through boots trend that seized the fashion industry. This particular article was on the online site of Dazed magazine and the writer stated that this trend of transparency is in fact a reflection of the trait of transparency that is increasingly rare, both on social media and in politics. One phrase that struck me as particularly interesting was: "Social media is, more than a way to keep in touch, an exercise in image cultivation." The writer has a valid point here. Another example of fashion being a reflection of societal change is Mary Quant's introduction of the mini skirt in the 60s which was around the time of the launch of the contraceptive pill, allowing for more sexual freedom among women.

Could it be that this trend of transparency was an accurate study of the minds of the millennials, who experienced the rise of social media at full force?

So, where does the bum bag fit into all of this deliberation? Well, my theory is that, much like Helmut Lang's see-through brief case, the bum bag also has a deeper meaning. One fact about the bum bag that is frequently over-looked is its ability to be for both women and men. Regardless of the design, the bum bag is an accessory that suitable fits either body type. Maybe, this is an important indication of the blurring of lines between what is perceived as strictly masculine or feminine. The bum bag is quickly becoming a staple piece for streetwear, heavily popular among youth. The compact nature of the bag, its practicality, and its ease are all signs of a generation's desire for quick, reliable, and wearable fashion.
